Profile of the Deputy Commissioner

The following is a career profile of Sheldon Stoilen, appointed BC Ferry Deputy Commissioner effective July 2008, through June 2014.

Mr. Stoilen holds a Batchelor of Science Degree (Mathematics) from the University of British Columbia (1968) and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in British Columbia in 1971.  He is a member of the Canadian and BC Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Financial Executives Institute of Canada and the Institute of Corporate Directors of Canada.

He has operated his own management consulting practice since 2000 specializing in organizational development, marketing planning and brand management. Prior to his consulting career he held several senior executive positions in the forest products and aviation industries.

From 1990 to 1999 he was with Canfor Corporation where he served as Vice President, Human Resources and Special Projects (1990-1992), Vice President, Coastal Operations (1993-1995), Group Vice President Corporate and Public Affairs (1996-1998). In 1999, as Vice President, Business Services, he was instrumental in implementing a shared services model enabling Canfor to capture significant cost efficiencies particularly in the area of supply chain management and logistics.

From 1972 to 1989 Mr. Stoilen had an extensive career in the aviation industry at Canadian Airlines International Inc. and its predecessor companies. From 1973 to 1984 he served as Assistant Treasurer and then Treasurer of Canadian Pacific Air Lines, Limited. In 1985 as Vice President, Corporate Development, he led the merger and acquisition strategy at CP Air as the airline industry consolidated under deregulation in Canada. This ultimately led to the formation of Canadian Airlines International Inc. where Mr. Stoilen held the positions of Senior Vice President, Marketing and Commercial Services (1986-1987) where he was responsible for both passenger and cargo revenues and Group Vice President, Human Resources (1988-1989). Notable achievements for Mr. Stoilen while he was with Canadian Airlines International include the successful financing of over $1 Billion of new aircraft, the launch of the first scheduled air service to China and the rationalization of a multitude of collective agreements as a result of the merger of five airlines in Canada.

Throughout his career Mr. Stoilen has served on a number of boards including Canadian Airlines International Inc., Transpacific Tours Limited, Canadian Holidays Ltd, Gemini  Reservations Systems, Canwell Distribution Ltd. and Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Ltd. He has also served on not-for-profit and association boards such as the BC Council Of Forest Industries, the Association of Canadian Travel Agents, Vancouver Opera Association and Junior Achievement of BC. He currently is active at the Vancouver Board of Trade where he serves on the Economic Development Committee, the Community Affairs Committee and the 2010 Subcommittee.
